Need a relaxing, reinvigorating break in the heart of the English countryside? The George Townhouse may be just the thing...
Exiting London onto unfamiliar country roads can be daunting, that is, until you pull up to the perfect little village of Shipston-On-Stour, Warwickshire, and its gem, The George Townhouse. Not knowing what to expect, we were told by the locals that The George Townhouse was the place to be. Though petite in size, the town of just a few thousand people, holds a true delight. At first glance, the establishment appears a simple Georgian building, merely blending in with its picturesque surroundings. However, it soon reveals itself to be the life and soul of the town, complete with charming dinners, inexpensive beverages and roaring social activity. And with décor fresh from the pages of an interiors magazine, the hotel’s recent remodel makes it the perfect getaway from the bustle of London.
The B&B has 15 guest rooms, on three separate floors. We were placed at No. 16, in what’s referred to as the ‘The Suite’. Located on the third floor, and isolated from staff and other guests, the suite overlooks the quiet streets of Shipston. Complete with its own private staircase, guests of No.16 are met with a rustic, yet chic surprise. The epitome of Country Living, the townhouse’s interiors sport charming shades of blue and grey, textures of suede and tweed, and a beautifully country wooden finish. The hints of blue and grey exist throughout, with subtle touches of golden lamps, bold red pillows and retro accessories such as telephones and radios.
The bathroom offers a divine bathing experience, complete with a deluxe double-door shower and claw-foot bathtub. Details include Temple Spa toiletries and a spa relaxation kit. Exactly as described, The George Townhouse does very little to disappoint.
Both the lobby and dining area feature beautiful framed pictures, coloured suede armchairs, and a welcoming bar, and the staff are also incredibly hospitable. They are ready to answer your every query with a cheerful smile – no matter how ‘London' the question!
Featuring a menu of delicious, quintessentially British cuisine, The George Townhouse’s food is both hearty and filling. Covering meat, fish and vegetarian dishes, with food options ranging from lamb rump, guinea fowl, duck and salmon to beetroot salad and cheddar soufflé, there’s something for everyone.
Breakfast gives overnight guests the choice between fruits, cereals and assorted breads, as well as hot meals at no additional cost.
A romantic getaway for two, in the heart of the English countryside.
